Few sectors are as topical as sustainable biogas and biomethane. For years they have grown gradually, often out of the spotlight, but in 2026 they find themselves increasingly at the nexus of decarbonisation and energy security.
A session at the European Sustainable Energy Week reflected initially on the positives: how production technologies are available, regulatory foundations are broadly in place, investment is on the rise, and so is ambition.
Yet significant production potential remains untapped. The path to a functioning market is hindered by numerous obstacles covering feedstocks, permitting, certification, contracting, and grid injection.
Delivering the keynote speech, Łukasz Koliński, Director for Green Transition and Energy System Integration at the Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission, said the Middle East energy shock has focused minds on alternatives.
