Hydrogen is consistently the most expensive transport fuel on a per-kilometre basis across the EU, according to the European Commission’s latest fuel price comparison framework.
Published by the European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO), the methodology standardises fuel prices into euros per 100km, enabling direct comparison between petrol, diesel, electricity, and hydrogen for equivalent vehicle classes.
The data pool monitored prices between Q1 2025 and Q1 2026.
Across 17 member states, hydrogen ranged between €10.53 ($12.32) and €20.62 ($24.13) per 100km, compared to €2.6 ($2.93) to €11.78 ($13.78) for electric, and €6.2 ($7.26) to €10.66 ($12.47) for petrol and diesel.
