The International Energy Agency (IEA) celebrated a productive and transformative year in 2024, coinciding with its 50th anniversary. The organization made significant strides in fulfilling its mission to safeguard global energy security and advance clean energy transitions, as highlighted during the December Governing Board meeting with representatives from its 32 Member governments.
“The IEA has notably advanced its mission, meeting key objectives on time and within budget while significantly increasing its influence,” said Governing Board Chair Anders Hoffmann. He praised Executive Director Fatih Birol’s leadership in addressing emerging challenges, including critical mineral security and Europe’s reduced reliance on Russian gas through LNG diversification.
Throughout 2024, the IEA upheld its founding mission by assessing oil stockholding commitments and conducting emergency preparedness exercises worldwide. It also contributed to market transparency through its Oil Market Report and medium-term Oil 2024 report. On natural gas security, the IEA expanded efforts through its Global Gas Security Review, Clean Fuels Market Monitoring Task Force, and the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference.
Electricity security was a key focus, with the establishment of an Electricity Security Task Force and new analyses on battery storage, seasonal demand variations, and renewable integration. The IEA also initiated work on nuclear energy financing to address both energy security and climate challenges.
The IEA demonstrated its relevance with a special report offering recommendations to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security. It expanded its focus on clean energy supply chains and critical minerals, launching the Critical Mineral Security Programme and releasing reports on recycling and diversification of supplies.
The IEA published over 100 reports in 2024, providing cutting edge data, analysis and policy recommendations across a broad range of energy topics. These included major annual publications such as the World Energy Outlook and World Energy Investment that serve as reference points for the sector.
In 2024, the IEA prioritized collaboration with emerging economies, recognizing their pivotal role in global energy trends. Highlights included opening its first office outside Paris in Singapore to bolster Southeast Asian cooperation and hosting the Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency in Nairobi, underscoring its growing engagement in Africa. Dr. Birol also co-chaired the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa.
The IEA expands with Latvia joining, progress on Colombia’s accession, and India’s membership under review. The Agency’s contributions to the G7, G20, and COP29 helped advance energy storage and grid goals, driving concrete outcomes in major multilateral forums.
The IEA showcased its convening power through events like the 2024 Ministerial, Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa, Global Energy Efficiency Conference, and the Global Summit on Clean Energy Transitions and a Global Conference on Energy & AI.
Dr. Hoffmann praised Dr. Birol’s leadership, foresight, and effectiveness, highlighting how they have strengthened the IEA’s impact and ensured its relevance in the rapidly changing global energy landscape.
