India Crosses 300 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity, Surpasses 60% Of 2030 Target

India has crossed a major milestone in its clean energy transition, with total non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity reaching 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026. The achievement puts India more than 60% of the way toward its target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

According to the latest figures, solar power accounts for the largest share of the country’s non-fossil capacity at 164.59 GW, followed by wind power at 58.14 GW. Large and small hydro projects together contribute 57.24 GW, while bio-power accounts for 11.75 GW. Nuclear power adds another 8.78 GW.

The total non-fossil capacity now represents more than 54% of India’s overall installed electricity generation capacity of around 552 GW. The milestone highlights the growing role of renewable and other clean energy sources in India’s electricity sector.

Solar power has emerged as the primary driver of this expansion. India’s solar capacity has increased from only 2.8 GW in 2014 to nearly 165 GW in 2026. Wind power has also expanded significantly, rising from around 21 GW in 2014 to more than 58 GW currently.

The pace of capacity addition has accelerated in recent years. During 2025-26, India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity. Solar power contributed 44.6 GW of the additions, while wind energy accounted for around 6 GW.

The expansion of renewable capacity has also resulted in higher clean electricity generation. Renewable energy generation increased from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26, reflecting the growing contribution of renewables to India’s power supply.

Alongside capacity expansion, the government has focused on strengthening domestic clean energy manufacturing. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has supported the development of domestic manufacturing of high-efficiency solar modules. The capacity enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar PV modules has now crossed 200 GW, compared with just 2.3 GW in 2014.

The government is also pursuing broader clean energy initiatives, including the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The programme aims to develop India as a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

The 300.50 GW milestone demonstrates that India’s clean energy transition is increasingly linked not only to climate goals but also to energy security, domestic manufacturing, industrial competitiveness and long-term economic resilience.
