The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has reported significant progress in India’s clean energy sector for the financial year 2024–25. According to the Ministry, the country added a record 29.52 GW of renewable energy capacity during the year, bringing the total installed renewable energy capacity to 220.10 GW as of 31st March 2025.

This marks a substantial increase from 198.75 GW recorded at the end of the previous financial year. The achievement reflects India’s steady progress toward its goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030, a commitment made under the ‘Panchamrit’ targets announced by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Solar energy was the largest contributor to the capacity addition in 2024–25. A total of 23.83 GW of new solar capacity was installed during the year, compared to 15.03 GW added in 2023–24. With this addition, the total installed solar energy capacity in the country has risen to 105.65 GW.

The installed capacity is distributed across various segments, including 81.01 GW from ground-mounted solar projects, 17.02 GW from rooftop solar installations, 2.87 GW from the solar components of hybrid projects, and 4.74 GW from off-grid solar systems. This growth highlights the widespread adoption of solar technology across both large-scale utility projects and decentralized applications such as rooftop and off-grid systems.

Wind energy also continued to make steady progress. During the financial year, 4.15 GW of new wind energy capacity was installed, an improvement over the 3.25 GW added in the previous year. The total installed wind energy capacity now stands at 50.04 GW. Wind energy remains an important part of India’s renewable energy sector, complementing the growth of solar power and contributing significantly to the country’s green energy transition.

The bioenergy sector further supported the renewable energy expansion. The total installed capacity from bioenergy sources has reached 11.58 GW, which includes 0.53 GW from off-grid and waste-to-energy projects. Small Hydro Power (SHP) projects also contributed, with the total installed capacity reaching 5.10 GW. Additionally, 0.44 GW of small hydro capacity is currently under implementation.

These sectors, while smaller in comparison to solar and wind, continue to play an important role in diversifying India’s renewable energy mix and ensuring a more balanced approach to clean energy development. The strong performance across multiple renewable energy segments in 2024–25 demonstrates India’s commitment to a sustainable energy future and its proactive efforts to meet its international climate goals.
