Iraq has started construction of a major 1-gigawatt solar power project in the Basra region, marking an important step in the country’s shift toward renewable energy. The project is part of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), a large energy initiative led by TotalEnergies in partnership with QatarEnergy and Iraq’s state-owned Basrah Oil Company.

The solar plant, known as Basra Sun, will be developed in four phases. Each phase will add 250 megawatts of capacity to the national grid. The project will be built on around 22,500 acres of desert land and will use more than two million bifacial solar panels. These panels are equipped with single-axis tracking systems that allow them to follow the movement of the sun during the day. This technology helps increase electricity generation by capturing more sunlight compared to fixed systems. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to supply enough clean electricity to power about 350,000 homes in southern Iraq.

The project is seen as a major step forward for a country that has long faced electricity shortages and relies heavily on imported energy. Frequent power cuts have affected households and businesses, especially during peak summer months. By adding large-scale solar capacity, Iraq aims to diversify its energy mix and reduce pressure on its power system. The project is also expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by nearly two million tons each year, supporting Iraq’s environmental goals.

The first phase of the solar plant is scheduled to start operations by late 2025. Full completion of all four phases is expected by 2028. Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, have described the project as part of a wider national strategy to expand renewable energy. The government has set a target to reach 12 gigawatts of solar capacity by 2030 and has already identified more than 140 potential sites across the country for future solar .

In addition to improving energy supply, the Basra solar project is expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and later during operation and maintenance. By working with international energy companies and attracting foreign investment, Iraq is aiming to strengthen its energy security, reduce emissions, and move toward a more sustainable and independent energy future.
