Maritime infrastructure firm Jan De Nul is to enter the North Sea carbon capture and storage (CCS) market by installing rock over a CO2 pipeline as part of Northern Endurance Partnership’s project.
Using its rock installation vessel Simon Stevin, it will operate a vertical fall pipe system to place the rock as a protective layer over the one metre-diameter pipeline, on the seabed at depths of 30 to 60 metres. The CO2 pipeline will be approximately 90 to 93 miles long and the initial phase of the network is expected to launch in 2028.
By using a remotely operated underwater vehicle at the end of the fall pipe, rocks can be installed at depths of up to 2,000 metres. The vessel, one of six in its fleet, has a capacity of 32,000 tonnes.

Saipem is responsible for the offshore execution scope of the project.
The Northern Endurance Partnership is confident it can safely store in the coming decades after releasing findings from its first exploration well in the southern North sea.
The partnership has to verify that the project’s construction and operation comply with the CO2 transport and storage licence granted by the UK government.
