Jordan Biogas Company has received three ISO standard certifications covering quality management, environmental management and occupational health and safety management.

Mohammad Al-Faouri, Deputy City Manager [Amman] for Environment and Regions and Deputy Chairman of the firm’s Board of Directors, said the certifications reflect the municipality’s and company’s focus on developing institutional work systems and improving performance efficiency in line with international standards.

The Greater Amman Municipality and Jordan Biogas Company began installing a fourth biogas generator at the Al-Ghabawi landfill this month. The new unit adds 1.56 MW of generating capacity, increasing total plant capacity to 6.28 MW.

The facility converts methane from landfill waste into electricity and is expected to supply about 55% of Greater Amman’s municipal electricity needs after the fourth engine enters service.

Jordan generates around 2.7 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually and estimated biogas production capacity is approximately 816.2 million cubic metres.

The Government of Jordan, in collaboration with international partners, established a 1MW biogas plant at Rusaifeh landfill near Amman in 1999.

Aqaba Water Company operates a biogas power-generation facility at its wastewater treatment plant in the coastal city.

The Middle East war has significantly impacted Jordan’s energy sector, according to S&P Global, leading to project delays and supply chain disruption.

“Despite the short-term setbacks, there is a paradoxical expectation that this disruption may solidify medium to long-term strategic resolve towards the energy transition in the key regional players,” it notes.
