Lebanon Plans 800 MW Solar And 440 MW Wind Projects To Strengthen Electricity Supply

Lebanon is advancing plans to transform its electricity sector through a proposed national energy investment programme focused on solar power, wind energy, battery storage and regional electricity interconnections. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s electricity grid, improve power supply reliability and reduce dependence on expensive fossil fuels.

Under the proposed energy investment plan, Lebanon intends to integrate 800 megawatts (MW) of solar power generation capacity into its electricity system. The programme also includes 440 MW of wind power projects, alongside battery energy storage systems and regional grid connections. These measures are intended to diversify the country’s energy mix and establish a more reliable and sustainable electricity network.

Solar power is expected to play a significant role in the proposed transformation, supported by the region’s abundant sunlight. The planned solar installations could help increase domestic electricity generation from renewable sources and reduce the pressure on conventional power infrastructure. Battery storage systems are also expected to support the integration of variable renewable energy by storing surplus electricity and making it available when generation falls or demand rises.

Lebanon has faced persistent electricity supply challenges for years, with frequent power shortages affecting households, businesses and industrial activities. These shortages have forced many consumers to depend on private diesel generators to meet their daily electricity requirements. However, generator-based electricity is expensive and contributes to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

The proposed investment programme seeks to address these challenges by expanding renewable energy generation and strengthening the country’s electricity infrastructure. Greater use of solar and wind power could help reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions and ease the financial burden associated with conventional electricity generation.

Battery energy storage and regional grid interconnections are additional components of the plan. Storage infrastructure could improve the management of renewable electricity, while stronger connections with neighbouring power networks could provide greater flexibility in balancing electricity supply and demand.

The development of renewable energy infrastructure could also create opportunities for investment in solar projects, energy storage technologies and associated grid equipment. Successful implementation, however, will depend on project financing, infrastructure development, regulatory support and effective coordination among relevant authorities.

As officials review the proposed framework, the planned 800 MW of solar capacity and 440 MW of wind power represent important elements of Lebanon’s efforts to modernise its electricity sector. If implemented, the programme could support a gradual shift towards cleaner electricity, improved energy security and reduced dependence on costly fossil fuels.
