Wicomico County has finalised agreements with French renewable natural gas (RNG) company Waga Energy to develop an RNG production facility at the Newland Park Landfill in Salisbury, Maryland.
The facility will process up to 1,600Nm³/h of biogas and produce more than 210,000 MMBtu (62 GWh) of pipeline-quality RNG or biomethane annually.
Engineering and facility development has commenced, with RNG production expected in the spring or summer of 2028.
Since November 2025, Waga Energy, the county’s existing landfill-gas-to-energy partner Archaea, and local utility providers have worked to finalise easements, agreements, and natural gas interconnection plans.
Waga Energy’s technology combines membrane separation to remove the carbon dioxide (CO2) and impurities contained in the landfill gas, and cryogenic distillation to extract oxygen and nitrogen, which it claims can recover 90% of methane from landfill gas.
Guénaël Prince, co-founder and CEO of Waga Energy, previously said, “Supplying RNG produced in Maryland for local use highlights the success of public-private collaboration in advancing the state’s ambitious decarbonisation goals.”
Maryland’s Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022 sets one of the most ambitious statewide greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals in the US.
It requires Maryland to reduce GHG emissions 60% from 2006 levels by 2031 and achieve net zero emissions by 2045.
This year, Waga Energy has announced plans to develop RNG production plants in , , , and .
