Technology giant Microsoft has signed a 15-year deal to purchase 626,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from North Star, a Saskatchewan-based bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project.
The North Star project is a collaboration between CCUS company Svante and the Meadow Lake Tribal Council that will convert agricultural waste from the council’s sawmill into energy while capturing emissions.
The project’s first phase is expected to capture around from the facility’s flue gas emissions
The captured CO2 will be transported to a nearby storage site, southwest of Meadow Lake, where it will be permanently sequestered in the Basal Cambrian Sandstone formation.
