Spain-based energy company Moeve and biomass-based solutions developer ENSO have agreed to develop biomass and renewable gas solutions to help energy-intensive industries replace fossil fuels.
The partnership will target sectors including chemicals, paper and food and beverage, where high demand for heat and steam can make decarbonisation more challenging.
The partners may also explore additional opportunities, such as converting biogas plants to biomethane and developing e-fuels using biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) generated at bioenergy facilities.
Moeve has indicated it could act as an offtaker for the new green molecules produced, while the captured biogenic CO2 could be used as a feedstock for e-fuel production.
ENSO previously developed a biopower plant in Garray, Soria, which it says was the first in Spain to integrate a system for capturing and upgrading 100% renewable, food-grade CO2.
The companies said the collaboration would help industrial customers reduce emissions, improve energy security and manage costs, while supporting investment in more efficient energy systems.
“We will provide our industrial customers with a broader range of energy solutions, combining heat, power, and renewable gases in processes where electrification is not always feasible,” said Carlos Aguilera, head of business development at Moeve decarbonize.
The partnership also comes ahead of planned cogeneration auctions in Spain, which could provide an opportunity for industrial facilities to upgrade existing generation systems and transition towards lower-carbon alternatives.
The auctions are a competitive bidding mechanism designed to award regulated financial support for 1.2GW of high-efficiency industrial power capacity. The goal is to modernise Spain’s industrial energy fleet and cut carbon emissions by around 8.4 million tonnes.
The European Commission approved a €3.1bn ($3.5bn) Spanish state aid scheme to fund the initiative over a 10-year period.
