New Zealand refines policies to build biogas sector

New Zealand is to build its biogas industry around three pillars as it faces a “pivotal moment” in its energy sector with declining natural gas reserves.

Addressing a Biogas Bridge forum, Simon Watts, New Zealand’s Minister of Climate Change and Revenue, said the pillars were: support signalling, removing barriers, and working with industry.

“You have made it clear that industry investment into a biogas market requires strong and consistent signals from government. We have heard this, and we are responding,” he said.

“We are actively working to strengthen market confidence and investment by clearly communicating our commitment to biogas. I have directed my officials to explore how government can more strongly provide clear signals.”
