Prime Minister Narendra Modi lays the foundation stone for a 250 MW / 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on October 11, 2026. The project is being developed by NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Limited, marking a significant step towards strengthening energy storage infrastructure in the state.
The project will be established across three locations in Tamil Nadu: Ottapidaram, Anuppankulam and Kayathar. With a combined capacity of 250 MW and 500 MWh, the battery storage system is designed to support electricity demand during peak hours and improve the flexibility and reliability of the power grid.
Battery energy storage systems play an important role in addressing the intermittent nature of renewable energy generation. By storing surplus electricity and releasing it when demand increases or renewable generation declines, these systems can help balance electricity supply and demand.
The proposed project is expected to support the integration of renewable energy into the electricity network by providing storage capacity that can improve grid management. It will also contribute to meeting peak-hour power requirements and strengthening the stability of the power system.
The initiative comes amid India’s broader efforts to expand renewable energy capacity and develop supporting infrastructure to ensure reliable electricity supply. As solar and wind power installations continue to grow, energy storage is becoming increasingly important for managing variations in generation and maintaining grid stability.
Through this project, NIRL and its parent company, NLC India Limited, are contributing to the development of energy storage infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. The project is expected to support the state’s clean energy transition while reinforcing the role of battery storage in building a more flexible and reliable electricity system.
