Scatec ASA has officially commenced commercial operations of its 273 MW Grootfontein solar power plant in South Africa, marking a significant expansion of the company’s renewable energy footprint in the region. The facility will supply electricity under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), ensuring predictable long-term revenue.

Located in the Western Cape, Grootfontein is the first solar project to reach commercial operation under South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) Round 5. It is also recognised as the largest co-located solar PV cluster in the province.

The plant is expected to generate approximately 700 GWh of clean power annually, offsetting an estimated 630,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Scatec holds a 51% equity stake in the project, while H1 Holdings, its Black Economic Empowerment partner, owns 46.5%. The Grootfontein Local Community Trust holds the remaining 2.5%. Scatec will also manage Operations & Maintenance and Asset Management activities.

Commenting on the milestone, Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog said the project strengthens the company’s role in supporting South Africa’s energy transition.

“We are proud to commence commercial operations at Grootfontein, reinforcing our strong track record in South Africa. This project builds on our commitment to deliver clean, reliable energy while creating long-term value for local communities and partners.”

Alberto Gambacorta, EVP and General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at Scatec, highlighted the project’s strategic significance as the company’s first in the Western Cape.

“Bringing the Grootfontein plant into operation is an important milestone for Scatec and our partners. This achievement reflects the dedication and resilience of our teams and contractors.”

The company stated that the launch marks continued momentum in its ambition to scale renewable energy deployment across Africa.
