UK energy firm SSE has paused its “standalone” hydrogen production projects amid “material policy delays” and will instead focus on regional infrastructure development and potential clean hydrogen offtake.

In its full-year results, it reported a £2.24bn ($31.4bn) operating profit, the company confirmed it logged a £21.8m ($29.2m) write-down on its own hydrogen production projects and joint venture investments in its thermal power generation subsidiary, SSE Thermal.

“During the course of 2025, SSE reviewed its hydrogen development strategy and, in response to material policy delays to the roll-out of low-carbon hydrogen, took the decision to pause its standalone hydrogen production projects,” it said.

The review came after SSE cancelled two projects in 2024, including its 1,600 tonnes per year project at its Gordonbush Wind Farm in the Scottish Highlands, which failed to secure subsidies in the UK’s first hydrogen funding round.
