Tantangan Solar Project Begins, Set to Deliver Clean Energy to 82,000 Mindanao Homes

International solar developer ib vogt has broken ground on the 99 MWp Tantangan Solar Power Plant in South Cotabato, marking a major milestone for clean energy development in Mindanao. The ceremonial event took place on August 6, 2025, gathering government officials, landowners, financiers, and community leaders.

The project, valued at PHP 4.49 billion (USD 80 million), is funded through green financing from HSBC and is the first to benefit from the joint Development and Construction Facility of British International Investment (BII) and Pentagreen Capital, which includes mezzanine financing.

Scheduled for completion in 2026, the plant is expected to produce over 150 GWh of renewable electricity annually—enough to power more than 82,000 households—and offset 66,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

“This milestone illustrates our shared determination to accelerate the energy transition in the Philippines,” said David Ludwig, CEO of ib vogt APAC. “We remain dedicated to supporting Mindanao’s sustainable growth and are grateful to our partners BII, HSBC, and Pentagreen.”

British Embassy Manila’s Chargé d’Affaires Mike Welch highlighted the project’s role in supporting communities and businesses, while Rohit Anand, Managing Director at BII, called it “a major milestone for clean energy in Mindanao.”

The Tantangan Solar Power Plant is ib vogt’s second project in Mindanao and part of its 1,000 MWp active development portfolio in the Philippines. The company said the project aligns with national renewable energy targets and will create green jobs, bolster local economies, and enhance energy security.

In addition to power generation, ib vogt will implement community-focused programs in partnership with local stakeholders to deliver long-term benefits for South Cotabato.
