Tata Power Renewable Energy Commissions 100 MW Group Captive Solar Project In Tamil Nadu

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has commissioned a 100 MW Group Captive Solar Project in Kayathar, Tamil Nadu, marking another major addition to its utility-scale renewable energy portfolio.

The project, known as TNGC-2, is located across Vellalankottai and Nalandhula villages in Tamil Nadu. With the commissioning of the facility, TPREL’s utility-scale renewable energy portfolio has increased to 12.3 GW, while its total operational renewable energy capacity has crossed 7 GW.

The solar project is expected to generate around 240.63 million units of clean electricity annually. According to the company, the project will help avoid approximately 1.5 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, supporting the Tata Group’s efforts to reduce emissions from its industrial operations.

Electricity generated by the plant will be transmitted through the Kayathar 400 kV Grid Substation. The power will be used to meet the renewable energy requirements of three Tata Group companies. TP Solar Limited will receive 40.625 MW, Tata Electronics Private Limited will receive 53.125 MW, while Tata Realty and Infrastructure Limited will receive 6.25 MW.

The Kayathar project also incorporates new solar tracking technology. It is the first Tata project in India to deploy Flexible Terrain Compatible (FTC) Single Axis Tracker technology. The system is designed to enable efficient solar generation across varied terrain and improve energy capture throughout the day.

The project has been equipped with 2,61,660 Mono PERC bifacial solar modules. The use of bifacial modules and single-axis tracking is expected to support higher generation from the available land area and improve overall plant performance.

Following the commissioning, TPREL’s operational renewable energy fleet comprises more than 5.7 GW of solar capacity and around 1.3 GW of wind capacity. The company also has an execution pipeline of approximately 5.3 GW. This includes 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind capacity, which are planned for phased completion over the next six to 24 months.

At the broader Tata Power level, the company has an operational and under-construction portfolio exceeding 26 GW. This includes utility-scale solar, floating solar and battery energy storage solutions, along with its power generation, manufacturing and distribution businesses.

The latest commissioning strengthens Tata Power’s renewable energy expansion and contributes to India’s broader target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. It also supports Tata Power’s long-term objective of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2045.
