Brunei’s state-owned Brunei Fertilizer Industries (BFI) has awarded an engineering study contract to engineering specialist Thyssenkrupp Uhde (Uhde) to expand its ammonia export infrastructure at its Sungai Liang facility in Belait District, Brunei Darussalam.
Uhde will carry out a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study for the expansion of BFI’s ammonia export infrastructure at the Sungai Liang Industrial Park site.
The BFI plant was built by Thyssenkrupp Uhde as a fully integrated fertilizer complex, including an ammonia plant with a capacity of 2,200 metric tons per day, and a urea plant and urea granulation unit, each with a capacity of 3,900 metric tons per day.
Uhde’s FEED study will explore options for expanding BFI’s ammonia export capacity, including the required storage, handling, and marine export infrastructure to support larger-scale shipments.
The scope includes the design of a cryogenic ammonia storage tank, as well as the development of export facilities such as jetty interfaces, pipelines, and ship-loading arms.

Nitrogen fertiliser is critical to the global food industry. It is produced by combining atmospheric nitrogen and hydrogen from natural gas at high temperatures and pressures to create ammonia.
The ammonia can then be used to produce nitrate fertiliser or mixed with liquid carbon dioxide to create urea.

Uhde was awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract from BFI to build the site in May 2018. The first production of ammonia as feedstock was completed in December 2021.
In April 2025, Uhde signed a five-year framework service agreement with BFI.
