TotalEnergies, Mistral launch AI program for oil and gas exploration

(WO) — TotalEnergies and Mistral have launched a three-year, more than $115 million artificial intelligence program aimed at developing advanced models for oil and gas exploration, reservoir characterization and field development.

The partnership will combine TotalEnergies’ subsurface data and nearly a century of geoscience and reservoir engineering expertise with Mistral’s artificial intelligence capabilities, including agentic AI.

The companies plan to develop AI models capable of integrating and interpreting large volumes of subsurface data to generate multiple development scenarios for exploration opportunities. The technology will also be used to optimize development and potentially extend the productive life of existing oil and gas projects.

TotalEnergies and Mistral will establish a joint scientific laboratory bringing together the operator’s subsurface specialists and Mistral’s AI researchers and engineers. The companies said the laboratory will develop proprietary tools tailored to TotalEnergies’ upstream operations.

“Exploration and reservoir engineering are among the areas where artificial intelligence can create the greatest value for our activities,” said Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. “By combining a century of geoscience data, the expertise of our teams and Mistral’s capabilities, we aim to develop a new generation of tools capable of supporting our experts in analyzing the most complex data and in their decision-making.”

The program also expands an existing collaboration between TotalEnergies and Mistral as the operator increases its use of AI across technical and industrial applications.

The announced investment exceeds €100 million, equivalent to approximately $115 million at current exchange rates.
