UK-based Getech has been awarded a €1m ($1.1m) European Commission contract to assess natural hydrogen potential across the continent.
During a 12-month study, the subsurface geoscience group will assess and map prospective natural hydrogen resources, evaluate extraction feasibility, and affect future regulation and market design.
It will contribute proprietary geological datasets, technology, and software, as well as exploration experience.
Chris Jepps, CEO of Getech, said the contract provides an “unparalleled opportunity” to validate and refine the company’s exploration methodologies at a “continental scale.”
“The methodology and expertise we build through this study are directly transferable, and we see clear potential to scale this partnership model to other regions,” he added.
It comes as natural hydrogen gains traction with exploration firms seeking and identifying prospective resources worldwide.
While praised for its potential to deliver huge volumes of low-cost, low-carbon hydrogen, it is nascent, and that more research is required for its safe and successful extraction.
France’s Mantle8 two Spanish exploration permits covering around 960km having ($35m) in Series A financing this year alone.
Worldwide, there are estimated to be over 40 companies exploring for natural hydrogen reserves.
