A group led by WhiteWater Midstream has agreed to proceed with building a pipeline to bring more natural gas from the Permian Basin in West Texas to the Houston area.

The Eiger Express Pipeline will transport as much as 2.5 billion cubic feet per day of gas, according to a statement Monday. The project, a joint venture of WhiteWater, MPLX LP, Oneok Inc. and Enbridge Inc., will follow the path of Matterhorn Express pipeline, which runs about 580 miles (933 kilometers).

Eiger is among efforts under way to expand natural gas infrastructure in the US as the country prepares to double its export capacity over the next decade. Energy Transfer LP earlier this month said it’s moving ahead with a $5.3 billion gas pipeline to connect the Permian with markets in New Mexico and Arizona, in what would be the biggest such US project in more than a decade.

In addition to export growth, pipeline companies are weighing the potential for significant additional domestic gas demand related to the artificial intelligence boom.

While power and gas consumption is growing across much of the US, inadequate takeaway capacity in the Permian acts as a bottleneck, sometimes leading to negative prices for gas in the basin. Gas production in the Permian has also boomed in recent years, as a byproduct of oil output.

WhiteWater and its partners expect Eiger to be in service in mid-2028.
