The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has officially inaugurated a 6.3-megawatt solar power plant in the Comoros, funded with AED 25.7 million (US$7 million), reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to global clean energy expansion and sustainable development.
The new facility, which will supply reliable electricity to Moroni and surrounding areas, is expected to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions, and improve overall living standards. The plant is integrated into the national grid through medium-voltage lines, enhancing power reliability across the region.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by President Azali Assoumani of the Union of the Comoros and Jumaa Rashed Al Remeithi, UAE Ambassador to the Comoros, alongside senior officials from both nations.
President Assoumani praised the UAE’s leadership in renewable energy and emphasized the transformative impact of the project. “This solar plant is more than an infrastructure milestone—it is a pivotal step in our clean energy transition, fostering economic stability and job creation,” he stated.
Ambassador Al Remeithi highlighted the strategic partnership, calling the project a testament to the UAE’s long-standing support for environmental sustainability and global climate action. “This initiative strengthens bilateral ties and showcases the UAE’s dedication to enabling renewable energy access in partner countries,” he said.
ADFD Director-General Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi affirmed the Fund’s strategic focus on renewable energy as a driver of sustainable development. “This project marks a critical milestone in our mission to support long-term environmental and economic resilience in the Comoros,” he noted. “Clean energy is a cornerstone of our investment strategy, and we will continue to work with our global partners to promote sustainable futures.”
Since 1979, ADFD has provided AED 439.4 million (US$119.6 million) in concessional loans and grants to the Comoros across key sectors such as energy, healthcare, education, and transportation.
The project directly supports several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), aligning with the UAE’s global development strategy and climate ambitions.
