Air Products targets market gap with CO2 plant in South Africa

Industrial gas major Air Products has launched a new carbon dioxide production facility in Sasolburg, South Africa, in response to growing market demand for the gas during busy summer periods or when existing sources are unavailable.

The Midlands CO2 facility, which was commissioned in April, will produce food and beverage-grade liquid CO2 using waste gas from Sasol’s Midlands N-Butanol plant.

After identifying the plant as a viable source of raw CO2 in 2019, Air Products spent several years assessing the gas stream’s potential for purification into food- and drink-grade CO2.
