The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is providing a €90 million loan to ENGIE Romania to support the growth of renewable energy in the country. The financing will be used to develop new renewable energy projects with a total capacity of at least 250 megawatts by 2028. ENGIE Romania is one of the country’s main suppliers and distributors of energy and is part of the ENGIE Group, a global utility company operating in 31 countries.

Grzegorz Zielinski, Director, Energy Europe at the EBRD, stated, “We are pleased to be partnering with ENGIE Romania for the first time to support its renewables ambitions and meet the decarbonisation targets. This investment reflects our continued commitment to the green transition in the region and lays the foundation for a strong long-term relationship built on shared decarbonisation goals.”

Nicolas Richard, CEO of ENGIE Romania, mentioned, “The EBRD’s support reinforces our ambition to expand our renewable energy portfolio, a core element of our decarbonization strategy, and to provide customers with green energy. We are proud to join forces with the EBRD in shaping a greener and more resilient energy for the Romanian customers.”

Since acquiring Distrigaz Sud through privatisation in 2005, ENGIE Group has invested more than €2 billion in Romania, focusing largely on expanding the gas distribution network and increasing renewable energy production. This investment by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development reflects its commitment to advancing the energy transition in Romania and supporting projects that contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable energy mix.
