This comes as the US looks to secure additional CO2 supply, with demand rising and existing sources struggling to meet capacity.
The plant count comes from new data released by the American Biogas Council, which says 118 of these facilities recycle food waste only, handling over 10 million tonnes of pre- and post-consumer inedible scraps each year.
The American Biogas Council also counted 124 wastewater plants in the US that combine food waste with wastewater solids to generate electricity, recycling an additional 1.1 million tonnes of wasted food each year.
