India’s flagship rooftop solar programme, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, has crossed a major milestone, with over 25 lakh residential households now powered by rooftop solar systems nationwide, marking a significant step in the country’s decentralised clean energy transition.

According to official data, more than 7.7 lakh households have recorded zero electricity bills, reflecting direct financial savings enabled by the scheme. The rollout has been supported by ₹13,926 crore in subsidy disbursements, alongside over 8.3 lakh sanctioned loan applications, highlighting strong participation from both households and financial institutions.

Launched with the objective of covering one crore residential households by FY 2026–27, the scheme is gaining rapid traction across urban and semi-urban regions, translating policy intent into on-ground adoption at scale.

A key differentiator of PM Surya Ghar is its citizen-centric programme design. The scheme operates through a fully digital application platform, enables direct transfer of subsidies to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, and offers collateral-free loans at a concessional interest rate of 5.75% (repo rate plus 0.50 bps). Simplified regulatory approvals have further reduced entry barriers for households opting for rooftop solar installations.

Beyond capacity additions, the programme is delivering broader socio-economic and environmental outcomes. These include tangible financial relief for families, enhanced household-level energy self-reliance, accelerated adoption of renewable energy, and strengthened progress toward India’s climate and sustainability commitments.

For stakeholders across the energy, finance, sustainability, and public policy ecosystems, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is emerging as a scalable model of how digital governance, targeted subsidies, and institutional financing can collectively drive large-scale energy transitions.

With rooftop solar adoption accelerating, the programme is no longer viewed as a future ambition, but as a nationwide movement delivering Muft Bijli and advancing energy self-reliance across Indian households.
