The UAE division of Swiss manufacturing firm Holcim and climate tech startup 44.01 have started the UAE’s first carbon capture and underground mineralisation pilot project for the cement industry.
Capturing CO2 directly from the flue gas of its Fujairah cement plant, the initiative connects live cement operations with 44.01’s geological mineralisation technology. Up to 4.5 tonnes of CO2 can be captured daily.
Captured carbon is transported and injected deep into Fujairah’s natural ultramafic rock formations – turning it into solid carbonate rock through an accelerated natural process.
Holcim UAE is partnering with Gulf Cryo, Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation, and Fujairah Environment Authority.
Ali Said, CEO of Holcim UAE, said, “When we announced this partnership, we set out to prove that industrial decarbonisation is not a far-off goal, but an immediate reality … deep cross-industry partnership remain vital to accelerating the UAE’s 2050 net zero target.”
Over the next six months, the project will generate operational insights to validate scalability and commercial potential of permanent carbon storage.
