Iberdrola Germany has completed a new 65 MWp solar plant in Saxony-Anhalt, covering 45 hectares and comprising more than 92,000 solar modules. The energy generated from this solar park will be supplied entirely to Salzgitter AG through a long-term power purchase agreement, supporting the company’s regional energy transition and providing fully renewable electricity for its green steel production. Felipe Montero, Managing Director of Iberdrola Germany, noted that the project reflects the strength of combining modern technology, strong partnerships, and long-term industrial collaboration to advance the energy transition. With Salzgitter AG, Iberdrola is working alongside a partner committed to sustainable transformation.
The plant is expected to generate around 60 gigawatt hours of renewable electricity annually, enough to power over 20,000 households while avoiding more than 23,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. The entire energy output will be integrated into Salzgitter AG’s steel production processes, helping decarbonize one of the most energy-intensive industrial sectors and reinforcing Iberdrola’s commitment to driving electrification in steel manufacturing. Ralph Schaper, Head of Energy Management at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, emphasized that the company’s SALCOS® – Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking program relies on strong partnerships to build a solid foundation for low-emission production and products.
The construction of the solar park was executed in several coordinated phases with specialized partners including Solarpro, P&Q, and EMT, while regional companies supported both planning and implementation. Beyond delivering clean energy, the project contributes to regional economic development and job security, further strengthening its long-term value for the community.
