Global Energy Alliance For People And Planet (GEAPP) Wins Inaugural World Economic Forum (WEF) Award For Advancing Energy Transition

The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) has been honored with the inaugural “Giving to Amplify Earth Action (GAEA) Award for Philanthropic-Public-Private Partnership” at the World Economic Forum. This prestigious award celebrates impactful collaborations that unite philanthropy, governments, and private sector stakeholders to address climate change.

GEAPP was recognized for its remarkable efforts in advancing renewable energy solutions across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Within just two years, the Alliance, consisting of over 50 partners, has mobilized $1.07 billion to fund 130 projects in 40 countries, averted an estimated 147,000 tons of carbon emissions, and improved the livelihoods of more than 2 million people.

GEAPP’s innovative model focuses on uniting partners across sectors to drive transformational clean energy projects in emerging markets, aligning with global sustainability goals. By leveraging blended finance and flexible capital, the Alliance addresses market barriers and unlocks resources from governments, multilateral development banks, private companies, non-governmental organizations, and communities. This approach ensures scalable and impactful solutions that contribute to reducing energy poverty and creating sustainable opportunities.

A key initiative launched by GEAPP in 2023 is the “Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Consortium”, a multi-stakeholder partnership involving over 15 countries and 20 resource partners. This initiative aims to enhance battery storage capacity in low- and middle-income nations, increasing grid reliability and supporting renewable energy integration for economic development.

The Consortium has fast-tracked flagship projects worldwide and continues to build a robust pipeline for future expansion. Additionally, GEAPP plays a critical role in distributed renewable energy projects, including its technical assistance within “Mission 300”, a joint initiative with the World Bank and the African Development Bank to bring energy access to 300 million people in Africa by 2030.

Saurabh Kumar, Vice President, India, GEAPP, stated, “The inaugural GAEA Awards reiterate the importance of collaboration in tackling climate change. Initiatives like Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) and grid modernization will be crucial to enable a people-positive energy transition. For these measures to succeed, alliances are vital. GEAPP’s model of partnerships aims to drive change on the ground. We are honored to receive recognition for our efforts. The Alliance will focus on scaling up financing, technical assistance, and partnerships in the renewable energy sector.”

The Giving to Amplify Earth Action (GAEA) Awards recognize innovative and scalable solutions that tackle global climate challenges. GEAPP was selected as one of five winners from over 120 nominations by an independent jury of climate and nature experts. In addition to its recognition, GEAPP will join the GAEA Awards community, gaining access to a global network that will amplify its efforts and mobilize new partnerships. The Alliance will also receive tailored support from the World Economic Forum, enabling it to scale its impact and drive systemic change for the benefit of people and the planet.

Gim Huay Neo, Managing Director, World Economic Forum, mentioned “The GAEA Awards recognize institutions and partnerships that are catalyzing transformative change for climate and nature. By showcasing successful innovations and collaborations across industry partners, and between government, business and civil society, we hope to inspire more to step forward and work together to shape a sustainable future for all.”
