The first two liquefied natural gas vessels from Qatar that had been cleared to pass the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict began have not sailed through.
Iran had permitted QatarEnergy’s vessels to transit the strait under an agreement reached with the US last week via Pakistani mediation, according to reports. But both ships, whose LNG had been loaded late February, were positioned off the coast on Monday evening.
The impasse comes as the US deadline to reopen the key passage is set to close this evening (7 February). Should a deal not be reached, the US has threatened to target key Iranian energy infrastructure – which would prompt retaliatory attacks in the Gulf.
