India’s Union Cabinet is investing around Rs 3,936 crore ($417m) in two more semiconductor projects in Gujarat through the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
ISM has now approved 12 projects, which represent a total investment of approximately Rs 1.64 lakh crore ($17.4bn).
The Union Cabinet has approved the country’s first commercial mini and micro-LED display facility, based on gallium nitride (GaN) technology, with semiconductor manufacturer Crystal Matrix Limited (CML) in Dholera, Gujarat.
The technology has applications in large display TVs and commercial displays, as well as medium and micro displays in smartphones, tablets, and smart watches.
The second approved project is a semiconductor packaging facility with semiconductor assembly company Suchi Semicon Private Limited (SSPL) in Surat, Gujarat.
The expected production capacity is around one billion chips each year for the electronic and automotive sectors.
According to local reports, CML will receive Rs 3,068 crore ($325m) and SSPL will be granted Rs 868 crore ($92m), respectively.
In August 2025, the Union Cabinet semiconductor projects worth Rs 4,600 crore ($487m).
In February this year, US data storage company Micron inaugurated its at Sanand Industrial Park near Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The facility will be serviced with ultra-high-purity (UHP) specialty and bulk gases via a dedicated electronic specialty gas hub developed by global industrial gas supplier INOX Air Products (INOXAP) at Dholera, Gujarat.
Under the ISM, India aims to reduce its heavy import reliance on semiconductor chips to help establish the country as a hub for electronics manufacturing.
By 2030, the global semiconductor industry is expected to grow to $1 trillion and Indian semiconductor demand is expected to cross $110bn.
