MTN Nigeria Partners With First WATT To Deploy 34 MW Solar And 40 MWh Battery Storage Across Network Sites

MTN Nigeria has entered into a new partnership with First WATT Renewable Limited to deploy a large-scale clean energy solution across its network infrastructure in Nigeria. The agreement will see the installation of 34 MW of solar power generation capacity along with 40 MWh of battery energy storage systems at several of the company’s key telecommunications sites. The initiative is aimed at reducing MTN Nigeria’s carbon emissions while improving the sustainability of its operations.

The project is expected to strengthen the reliability of MTN Nigeria’s network by providing a cleaner and more dependable source of electricity. Many telecommunications sites depend on conventional power grids and diesel generators, which can be costly and are often affected by power outages. The addition of solar energy systems combined with battery storage will help maintain uninterrupted operations by supplying electricity even when grid power is unavailable.

The battery energy storage systems will store excess electricity generated by the solar panels during daylight hours. This stored energy can then be used during the night or during periods of low solar generation, reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based backup power and lowering operating costs. The project is also expected to improve energy efficiency across MTN’s critical network infrastructure.

In addition to powering telecommunications facilities, the partnership includes the deployment of renewable energy systems for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at selected MTN Nigeria locations. This reflects the company’s broader sustainability strategy by supporting cleaner transportation alongside renewable energy adoption. The EV charging facilities are expected to encourage the use of low-emission vehicles within the company’s operations.

The collaboration demonstrates how major corporations are increasingly investing in renewable energy to achieve their environmental goals while improving operational resilience. By combining solar generation, battery energy storage, and EV charging infrastructure in a single initiative, MTN Nigeria is taking significant steps toward reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. The project also serves as an example of how the telecommunications sector can contribute to climate action by integrating sustainable energy solutions into its core infrastructure while supporting Nigeria’s transition to a cleaner and more resilient energy future.
