Miatta Fahnbulleh has been appointed UK Secretary of State for Energy in Andy Burnham’s new cabinet.
She was formerly Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Energy.
A Future Biogas statement said she delivered the keynote speech when it commissioned the UK’s first unsubsidised biomethane production plant with carbon capture.
“It’s genuinely encouraging to see a politician who takes the time to understand what renewable gas production looks like in practice,” it said.
“The UK needs decision makers who grasp both the complexity and opportunity of decarbonising our energy system. Green growth and economic growth are not in competition. With the right policy environment, they move forward together.”
Fahnbulleh was elected MP for Peckham, London, in July 2024.
Previous roles included Chief Executive of the New Economics Foundation (2017 to 2023) and Director of Policy and Research at the Institute for Public Policy Research.
She was Head of Cities in the policy unit at the Cabinet Office from 2011 to 2013.
Her predecessor, Ed Miliband, has been appointed Foreign Secretary. Burnham officially became the seventh UK Prime Minister in 10 years on Monday (20 July).
