UK-based waste wood energy operator Evero is set to join the HyNet North West carbon capture network as plans progress to retrofit its Ince Bio Power Plant in Cheshire with carbon capture technology.
The existing facility is located within Protos, Peel NRE’s energy and resource hub, where the planned Protos Spur pipeline will connect industrial emitters to the wider HyNet carbon dioxide (CO2) transport and storage network for permanent offshore storage.
The carbon capture project is expected to remove 217,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere each year while processing around 170,000 tonnes of waste wood.
Designed to transport around 980,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, the Protos Spur pipeline is expected to provide carbon transport infrastructure for businesses across the Protos site.
According to Richard Barker, Development Director at Peel NRE, the project demonstrates how the right investment pathways can transform the way companies generate energy while tackling climate change.

“Evero’s plans show the potential of new carbon capture technologies in fully decarbonising existing infrastructure,” he said.
The Ince Bio Power Plant generates low-carbon electricity by processing waste wood that would otherwise be sent to landfill.
If approved, the retrofit is expected to be operational around the end of the decade. The planning application, submitted in May, will be considered by Cheshire West and Chester Council.
The project fits with a in neighbouring Deeside, where Worley was chosen as EPC contractor for a proposed power station to be developed by Uniper.
The station would be fitted with carbon capture technology to capture at least 95% of its CO2 emissions. It is also planned to connect with nearby CO2 transport and storage infrastructure as part of HyNet.
