AMEA Power has announced the commercial operation of its 24 MWp Ituka Solar PV Project in Uganda, marking a significant milestone for the country’s renewable energy sector. Located in Uleppi in the Madi Okollo District of Uganda’s West Nile region, the project is the first solar independent power producer (IPP) project in the region and the largest installed-capacity IPP in West Nile.
The solar power plant was developed by Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, a Uganda-registered project company fully owned by AMEA Power. The project has now reached its Commercial Operations Date (COD) following the successful completion of testing and grid connection activities.
In July 2026, the project’s 25 MVA, 132/33 kV substation was successfully energized. The energization enabled the project to complete reliability and performance tests and begin supplying electricity to Uganda’s national grid through the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), which is the project’s offtaker.
The 24 MWp solar facility is expected to generate approximately 53,940 MWh of clean electricity annually. The project is designed to support grid reliability and meet the increasing electricity demand in Uganda’s West Nile region, where energy infrastructure is expected to play an important role in supporting industrial and economic development.
According to AMEA Power, the solar plant will be capable of providing power equivalent to the electricity needs of more than 192,640 households. It is also expected to help avoid approximately 26,600 tonnes of carbon emissions every year, contributing to Uganda’s clean energy and emissions-reduction objectives.
Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, said the commercial operation of the solar PV project represents an important milestone for both the company and Uganda’s energy sector. He highlighted the role of renewable energy in strengthening energy infrastructure and supporting economic development in the West Nile region.
The project represents an investment of approximately USD 27 million and was financed through a combination of debt and equity provided by AMEA Power and the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF).
The commissioning of the Ituka Solar PV Project marks AMEA Power’s first operational renewable energy asset in Uganda. The company said the project further expands its renewable energy portfolio in East Africa and reflects its continued investment in sustainable energy infrastructure.
The operationalization of the plant is expected to contribute to Uganda’s growing renewable energy capacity while improving electricity availability and supporting the long-term development of the West Nile region.
