Ameresco, Inc., a top energy solutions provider, has won a major solar energy and resiliency project at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base (CDSB) in Oromocto, New Brunswick. This project supports Canada’s goal of powering federal facilities with 100% clean electricity by 2025. The Gagetown Solar Project, worth CAD $26.7 million, will install an 8.9 MWdc/7.35 MWac ground-mounted solar system, generating about 8,900 MWh of electricity annually—covering 20% of the base’s energy needs. This will help the Department of National Defence cut greenhouse gas emissions, preventing 7,695 metric tons of CO₂ emissions per year.

The project includes 14,496 solar panels across the base and will be managed by Ameresco under a 25-year contract. All the energy produced will be used on-site, boosting energy security and resilience. It will also save the base about CAD $1.3 million in annual utility costs. Part of Canada’s Federal Buildings Initiative, the project improves energy efficiency at one of the country’s largest bases, which spans over 200 buildings and 525,000 square meters.

Bob McCullough, President of Ameresco Canada, said “We’re proud to partner with the Department of National Defence on this important project. This solar energy solution is more than about powering Gagetown today — it’s about creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for Canada. By investing in renewable energy, we’re helping the country move closer to its long-term sustainability goals while delivering reliable, cost-effective power for years to come.”

Ameresco will handle the design, engineering, procurement, and construction, ensuring seamless integration with the base’s existing power system. Equipped with advanced monitoring technology, the system will optimize performance over its lifespan. The project is set for completion by June 2025, with Ameresco overseeing operations and maintenance for the next 25 years, guaranteeing efficiency and cost savings.
