Ameresco And Killeen Regional Airport Mark Completion Of Solar Project In Central Texas

Ameresco, Inc., a leading energy solutions provider focused on advancing the energy transition, has successfully completed the solar-integrated covered parking project at Killeen Regional Airport in Central Texas. This initiative enhances the traveler experience by providing covered parking in short-term and rental lots while also implementing an airport-wide LED lighting retrofit. The project not only underscores the airport’s commitment to sustainability but also delivers long-term economic benefits by significantly reducing energy costs.

The 1.2 MW solar project features multiple solar arrays—one serving the terminal, another for the rental lot, and a third for the short-term parking area. Additionally, a comprehensive lighting upgrade has replaced both interior and exterior lights with energy-efficient LEDs, ensuring improved visibility and lower maintenance costs. A covered pedestrian walkway has also been constructed, offering travelers a seamless and comfortable connection between the terminal and the rental lot.

Lou Maltezos, President of Central & Western USA, Canada Regions at Ameresco, said in a statement, “Ameresco is proud to partner with Killeen Regional Airport on this solar-powered covered parking project. By integrating solar technology and energy-efficient lighting, this great project not only modernizes the airport infrastructure but also delivers significant cost savings.”

Mike Wilson, Executive Director of Aviation for the City of Killeen, stated, “This is a day that we have looked forward to for many years. The full project includes a complete LED retrofit of the entire Airport campus. I am very proud of this project because not only will it decrease the airport’s operating budget by lowering our energy costs, but it will also provide a much-needed upgrade to the customer experience.”

Funded through a competitive grant process under the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Terminals Program (ATP), the project had a total budget exceeding $7 million, with $5 million awarded through the grant. The investment is expected to offset 68% of the airport’s purchased electricity, marking a significant step toward greater energy efficiency and sustainability.

Mayor Debbie Nash-King, mentioned, “This marks our city’s first major solar project. It stands as a testament to our staff’s proactive approach to environmental stewardship and our commitment to creating a greener future for generations to come.”

To celebrate the project’s completion, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held, attended by Mayor Debbie Nash-King, Airport Executive Director Mike Wilson, and representatives from Ameresco. The event brought together key stakeholders whose collaboration and dedication were instrumental in making this sustainable transformation a reality.
