Actis to Acquire 244 MW/1,141 MWh Battery Energy Storage Projects from DRI in Poland to Expand Renewable Energy Portfolio

Actis, a global investor in sustainable infrastructure, has announced the acquisition of two utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects from renewable energy developer DRI in Poland, representing a combined capacity of 244 MW/1,141 MWh. The transaction marks a significant step in Actis’ strategy to expand its recently established Polish renewable energy platform and strengthen its presence in Central and Eastern Europe’s growing energy storage market.

The acquisition includes a 112 MW/518 MWh battery storage project in Kozienice and a 132 MW/623 MWh project in Trzebinia. According to Actis, the Kozienice project has already been acquired and is ready to enter the construction phase, while the Trzebinia project is subject to a signed acquisition agreement, with transaction completion scheduled after the facility becomes operational.

Together, the two projects will provide 244 MW of power capacity and 1,141 MWh of energy storage, offering more than four hours of discharge duration. The facilities are expected to be among the first utility-scale battery storage developments to achieve commercial operation in Poland, supporting the country’s efforts to improve electricity grid flexibility and integrate increasing volumes of renewable energy.

Both projects benefit from secured revenue arrangements through 17-year inflation-indexed capacity market contracts. These agreements are designed to provide long-term revenue visibility while supporting the availability of flexible electricity capacity within Poland’s power system.

The acquisitions build on Actis’ earlier agreement to acquire Klara Renewables, a Polish onshore wind portfolio with 171 MW of installed capacity and approximately 275 MW of potential hybridisation opportunities. The Klara Renewables transaction was signed in July 2026 as part of Actis’ broader strategy to establish an integrated renewable energy investment platform in Poland.

By combining wind generation assets with battery energy storage systems, Actis aims to develop a diversified portfolio capable of responding to electricity market fluctuations, improving renewable energy utilization, and supporting grid stability.

The company’s investment approach focuses on integrating renewable electricity generation with flexible storage infrastructure to manage market volatility and capture opportunities across different segments of the electricity market.

Poland’s ongoing energy transition is creating opportunities for large-scale battery storage investments as the country seeks to reduce its dependence on coal-fired electricity generation while expanding renewable energy capacity.

According to the projections cited by Actis, Poland is expected to retire approximately 18 GW of coal-fired generation capacity by 2040 while adding around 50 GW of renewable energy capacity and 14 GW of gas-fired power generation.

Electricity demand is also forecast to more than double by 2050, driven by industrial electrification, the expansion of electric transportation, and broader economic growth. These developments are expected to increase the need for flexible electricity infrastructure capable of balancing renewable energy generation and maintaining grid reliability.

The country’s capacity market framework, which provides long-term revenue arrangements for eligible electricity resources, is also supporting investment in energy storage infrastructure. Growing demand for corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) is further contributing to the development of Poland’s renewable energy sector.

Commenting on the acquisition, Jaroslava Korpanec, Head of Central and Eastern Europe at Actis, highlighted the importance of infrastructure investment in supporting the region’s energy transition and strengthening energy security.

She stated that Central and Eastern Europe has historically experienced underinvestment in energy infrastructure, while the need to accelerate decarbonisation and develop independent energy supply has become increasingly important.

Korpanec emphasized that Poland remains one of Europe’s major electricity markets but continues to rely heavily on carbon-intensive generation. She noted that battery energy storage projects such as Kozienice and Trzebinia could provide the flexibility required to support the transition from coal to renewable energy while maintaining electricity system stability.

Murat Cinar, Chief Executive Officer of DRI, also highlighted the growing importance of battery storage in Poland as renewable energy penetration increases.

He stated that the Kozienice and Trzebinia projects are positioned to provide significant grid flexibility and expressed confidence in their continued development under Actis’ ownership. Cinar added that the transaction reflects DRI’s capabilities in developing and advancing renewable energy infrastructure projects across European growth markets.

The acquisition further strengthens Actis’ investment activities in Poland, where renewable energy development and electricity storage infrastructure are expected to play an increasingly important role in the country’s long-term power sector transformation.

The two battery storage projects are expected to complement Actis’ wind energy investments by providing flexible capacity that can respond to changes in electricity demand and renewable generation.

The development also reflects increasing investor interest in utility-scale energy storage across Central and Eastern Europe, where the expansion of intermittent renewable energy sources is creating demand for technologies capable of supporting grid balancing, energy security, and electricity market efficiency.

With a combined capacity of 244 MW/1,141 MWh, the Kozienice and Trzebinia battery storage projects represent a major expansion of Actis’ Polish renewable energy platform. Once operational, the facilities are expected to strengthen Poland’s electricity grid flexibility, support renewable energy integration, and contribute to the country’s transition toward a more diversified and lower-carbon energy system.
