Bihar has taken a major step toward strengthening its renewable energy infrastructure with the commissioning of the first phase of the Kajra Solar Power Project in Lakhisarai district. The project, being developed at an overall cost of around ₹2,800 crore, is expected to significantly boost the state’s clean energy capacity.

According to an official statement, the first phase includes a 185 MW solar power plant supported by a 254 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system. This phase has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹1,810 crore. The state government has also completed the associated transmission infrastructure, including energisation of the transmission line and transformer facility, ensuring smooth evacuation of power from the plant.

Bihar Energy Secretary and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, Manoj Kumar Singh, said that the battery energy storage system will enable the plant to supply uninterrupted electricity for four to five hours during peak demand periods. This is expected to improve grid stability and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.

The project is being implemented in two phases. Under the second phase, a 116 MW solar power plant along with a 241 MWh battery energy storage system is currently under construction at an estimated cost of ₹1,055 crore.

Once fully completed, the Kajra Solar Power Project will have a total installed capacity of 301 MW, supported by 495 MWh of battery storage. The Bihar government aims to commission the entire project by January 2027, marking a significant milestone in the state’s renewable energy expansion and clean power transition.
