Canadian carbon capture and storage specialist Svante Technologies has completed a gigafactory in Burnaby, British Columbia, capable of manufacturing solid sorbent-based carbon capture and removal filters.

The first-of-its-kind facility is equipped to manufacture enough solid sorbent-based filters to capture up to 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

Svante’s technology uses metal-organic frameworks and captures CO2 from diluted flue gas streams with high capacity and selectivity over water. It captures 95% of the total CO2 emitted from industrial sources by adsorbing CO2 through direct low-pressure steam injection for regeneration.

Claude Letourneau, President and CEO of Svante, described the site development as a critical step forward in building the necessary infrastructure to scale the carbon management industry.
