GEON Commissions 10 MW/20 MWh BESS Project In Phalodi, Rajasthan

GEON has commissioned a 10 MW/20 MWh utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Phalodi, Rajasthan, marking a new development in the state’s energy storage sector. The GEON BESS Project-2 was commissioned on September 2, 2026, for a renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP).

The project is among the early storage assets to receive regulatory approval under the Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) Green Energy Open Access Regulations, 2025. The facility has been designed to support the integration and use of renewable power through open access arrangements.

GEON managed the project’s execution from end to end. The company was responsible for major technical elements, including battery system containerization, Power Conversion Systems (PCS), and Energy Management Systems (EMS). It also conducted testing at multiple stages, covering factory acceptance testing, pre-commissioning and site acceptance testing before the project was commissioned.

The Phalodi BESS is intended to help commercial and industrial consumers manage electricity demand and improve the economics of renewable power procurement. The system can store electricity generated from clean energy sources and discharge it during periods of higher electricity demand. This allows consumers to reduce their dependence on expensive peak-period grid electricity.

The storage system can also reduce reliance on conventional grid banking arrangements and provide industrial consumers with greater flexibility in managing their electricity supply. GEON stated that similar energy storage systems can be deployed either directly at industrial facilities or at off-site open access generation hubs, depending on consumer requirements.

With renewable energy deployment increasing across India, energy storage is becoming increasingly important for balancing intermittent generation and supporting reliable electricity supply. The Phalodi project demonstrates the potential role of BESS technology in open access power markets while supporting industrial consumers seeking cost-efficient and lower-carbon electricity solutions.

GEON said scalable energy storage infrastructure can help businesses optimize power procurement, manage peak demand and support the broader transition toward reliable, round-the-clock renewable energy.
