German utility EWE has started building a 24km hydrogen pipeline that will connect its 320MW electrolyser to the country’s 9,000km hydrogen core network.
The pipeline between Emden and Leer, known as H2CoastLink 1, is expected to be fully commissioned by autumn 2027, when EWE’s major green hydrogen plant is due online.
It will transport around 26,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year from the plant, with steelmaker tonnes annually from the core network to its Flachstahl site from 2030.
Funded by the German government and the State of Lower Saxony under the EU’s important projects of common European interest, EWE board member Dr Frank Reiner said the pipeline was a “crucial component” of the supply deal with Salzgitter.
It comes less than six months after the pipeline from Lower Saxony’s office for mining, energy, and geology.
EWE’s Emden green hydrogen plant has been under construction since and will form the first part of the company’s Clean Hydrogen Coastline (CHC) initiative.
CHC also aims to repurpose a natural gas salt cavern storage in Huntorf to store hydrogen. It is also due online in 2027.
