Field Test Proves LONGi Hi-MO 9 Outperforms TOPCon Under Desert Conditions

An empirical project led by Inner Mongolia Energy Group in China has delivered groundbreaking insights into photovoltaic (PV) performance in desert environments. Covering roughly 1,533 hectares, the initiative marks the first direct comparison between LONGi’s Hi-MO 9 modules, featuring HPBC2.0 technology, and conventional TOPCon modules under sandy conditions, providing crucial data for future PV technology selection in arid regions.

The site, which receives about 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, also endures a harsh continental climate characterized by drought, minimal rainfall, high evaporation, and frequent sandstorms—conditions that put PV reliability and long-term performance to the test. To assess performance, 640W BC modules and 575W TOPCon modules were installed side by side.

Between April and July 2025, results showed LONGi’s BC modules outperformed TOPCon with a 2.45 percent higher electricity yield per kilowatt and a 9.05 percent greater power output per unit area. Notably, in June, a month with 14 overcast or rainy days, the BC modules consistently surpassed TOPCon daily, achieving a 2.44 percent cumulative monthly generation gain, underscoring their superior efficiency in low-light conditions.
