UAE-based industrial gas firm Gulf Cryo’s new Abu Dhabi carbon capture facility will be operational within weeks, targeting 73,000 metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) of carbon dioxide (CO2) production capacity in the UAE by the end of 2026.
It comes as part of the company’s plans to raise its liquid CO2 capacity in Gulf Coast Countries (GCC) to 1,300 tonnes per day.
Georgios Beretsos, Chief Commercial Officer of Gulf Cryo, told state-owned Emirates News Agency (WAM), that recent developments and the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic underscored the need for local production and resilient supply.
The new plant will add to Gulf Cryo’s existing high-purity carbon capture facility developed in partnership with in the northern emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
The Ras Al Khaimah plant captures around 17,000 mtpa of CO2 from the manufacturer’s emissions and converts them it into food-grade CO2, which can be used not only in food and beverage applications but also energy and healthcare.
In September, Gulf Cryo said it would across the GCC region.
It said will reach 470,000 mtpa of CO2 production capacity dedicated to the regional merchant market by the end of 2026 – which can scale to 750,000 mtpa from existing facilities “whenever regional demand requires it”.
The expansion is driven by long-term carbon capture and recovery projects.
While production is anchored in the three primary hub countries of the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, the infrastructure is designed to supply and support neighbouring GCC markets including Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman.
More widely, in May, UAE steel and building materials company Emsteel with Gulf Cryo to advance a fully integrated CO2 business model across its operations.
In July, Gulf Cryo also with climate technology startup CO2minX to advance CO2 mineralisation opportunities.
