The Indian stock market closed higher on October 16, 2026, as benchmark indices recorded gains during the trading session. The S&P BSE Sensex advanced 0.56% to settle at 74,729.27, while the Nifty 50 gained 0.53% to close at 23,119.00. Despite the positive performance of the broader market, stocks across the renewable energy and power sectors witnessed mixed movements on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
EKI Energy Services emerged as one of the leading gainers in the green energy segment, registering a rise of 5.0%. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) also ended higher, gaining 1.32% on the BSE to trade at ₹130.25. On the NSE, IOC advanced 0.75% to close at ₹129.80.
Tata Power recorded buying interest during the session, with its shares rising 1.19% to ₹353.45 on the BSE. Amara Raja Energy & Mobility and Olectra Greentech also remained in positive territory, each recording gains of more than 1%. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) witnessed relatively limited movement, closing at ₹3,660.00 on the BSE, up 0.11%.
However, several companies faced selling pressure despite the gains in the benchmark indices. Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited recorded the steepest decline among the highlighted stocks, falling 6.08% on the BSE to close at ₹164.40. The company’s shares also declined 5.21% on the NSE, reflecting weakness in the renewable energy engineering, procurement and construction segment during the session.
Kabra Extrusiontechnik also ended lower, with its shares declining 1.91% on the BSE to ₹801.60. Adani Green Energy slipped 0.46% to ₹1,300.00, while Reliance Industries declined 1.09% to close at ₹1,210.00.
NTPC Green Energy Limited recorded a marginal decline of 0.65%, with its shares settling at ₹90.10 on the BSE. Juniper Green Energy also witnessed selling pressure, with its shares falling 1.80%.
The session highlighted the contrasting performance of companies operating across renewable energy, conventional power, electric mobility and associated infrastructure segments. While selected stocks attracted buying interest, others faced declines amid varying market conditions.
The positive closing of the Sensex and Nifty provided a supportive backdrop for the broader market. However, the mixed performance of green energy stocks indicated that gains were not uniform across the sector, with individual companies experiencing different trading trends during the session.
