German e-fuels producer Ineratec has been awarded renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) certification for its pilot facility near Frankfurt, allowing its synthetic fuels to meet EU targets.
The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification was granted to the firm’s 2,500-tonne-per-year Era One plant, which began .
The facility synthesises green hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide to produce synthetic crude oil for further processing into sustainable aviation fuels, marine fuels, and e-diesel.
RFNBO rules require facilities to use entirely renewable energy and achieve greenhouse gas emissions reductions of at least 70% compared to fossil fuels.
It comes as Germany looks to meet its recently passed mandates for RFNBOs in road transport, which will ramp up to 10% by 2040.
Additionally, wider EU legislation has set mandates for e-fuels in aviation and maritime.
The firm said the certification would reduce regulatory risk and support off-take agreements with end-users like airlines and shipping companies.
Earlier this month, Era One synthetic kerosene made up for a KLM passenger flight from Amsterdam to Hamburg. German chemical lab ASG Analytik-Service distilled the fuel before it was mixed with fossil kerosene from MB Energy.
By early 2027, Ineratec plans to install and certify its own upgrading units at the pilot plant to allow it to produce “market-ready” fuels on site.
