NTPC Signs Mous To Invest Over ₹2 Lakh Crore In Madhya Pradesh Renewable Energy Projects

NTPC Limited, along with its subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), has signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Government of Madhya Pradesh during the Global Investors Summit held in Bhopal on February 24-25, 2025. The agreements focus on developing renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, pumped hydro, and other carbon-neutral energy sources in the state.

One of the key MoUs was signed between NGEL and Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited (MPPGCL) for setting up renewable energy projects with a capacity of up to 20 GW or more. The estimated investment for this initiative is ₹1,20,000 crore. This agreement will lead to the formation of a Joint Venture Company (JVC) to help meet the Renewable Generation Obligation (RGO) of MPPGCL and the Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) of Madhya Pradesh DISCOMs.

Another MoU was signed between NTPC Limited and the Government of Madhya Pradesh for establishing other sustainable non-fossil fuel power plants. This initiative is expected to require an investment of ₹80,000 crore. Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) signed the agreement on behalf of the state government.

Additionally, an agreement was signed for the development of an 800 MW pumped hydro storage project, with an estimated investment of ₹4,000 crore. These initiatives will support the state’s renewable energy transition and contribute to the Government of India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

The MoUs were signed in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh, along with senior officials from both the state government and NTPC. These agreements are expected to play a significant role in boosting renewable energy development and ensuring energy security in Madhya Pradesh.

NTPC is India’s largest integrated power utility, supplying one-fourth of the country’s electricity demand. The company currently has an installed capacity of over 77 GW, with an additional 29.5 GW under construction, including 9.6 GW of renewable energy. NTPC is committed to achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and continues to adopt sustainable energy solutions to support India’s clean energy goals.
