Second floating LNG terminal starts up at German port

The second LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven (02) has been commissioned in a boost to Germany’s energy supply and security.

The island jetty, located around 1.5km from the mainland, is Deutsche Energy Terminal’s (DET) third floating import terminal for LNG.

Dr Peter Röttgen, Managing Director of DET, said the country must reduce the risks of “one-sided dependence” on energy import, referring to Russia, and diversify the supply routes of natural gas. The second terminal was connected to the grid in two-and-a-half years.

DET – which is now responsible for two terminals in Wilhelmshaven and one in Brunsbüttel – worked with project partners Engie Deutschland, which built the marine infrastructure, and green energy company Tree Energy Solutions.
