US oil and gas engineering firm Syngular Solutions is partnering with French tubular solutions provider Vallourec to develop carbon capture and geological sequestration projects in Brazil.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU), Syngular could use Vallourec’s tube technology within its bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) capabilities.
The MOU sets out a framework for the development of Brazilian BECCS projects. The number, location, and timelines of the potential projects remain undisclosed.
BECCS technology supports decarbonisation efforts by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from energy systems that use biomass as feedstock for permanent geologic storage.
Syngular is currently working in the Brazilian ethanol industry to integrate geological storage and cut CO2 emissions.
Andre Lacerda, Senior Vice-President of South America for Tubes Activities at Vallourec, said Brazil’s large ethanol industry and geological formations for CO2 storage made it “particularly relevant” for BECCS projects.
In 2024, the United States Department of Agriculture named Brazil as the world’s second-largest ethanol producer.
The Brazilian government aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 48.4% by 2025 and 53.1% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.
